He wanted to eagerly install some of the new iPhone apps from the iTunes store. The result is a bricked iPhone. The attempts to downgrade failed on the warning that he is using a higher version and downgrade is not possible.

So be warned and DO NOT upgrade until the iPhone DEV team is ready with packaging their new unlock software. I do not really understand the view of Apple here because millions of these unlocked iPhones are sold already. Are they hoping that you trade it in for the new model?

How to upgrade your current iPhone to firmware 2.0 ?

*** DO NOT TRY TO RUN THIS PROCEDURE ***

Make a backup since all your content will be deleted after firmware upgrade.
Google and download the file “ iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw”.
Option + update your iPhone in iTunes with connected iPhone and select the downloaded file.
The process runs in 3 parts: preparing, updating, verifying. During the update there is nothing to see, only white apple on black background appears. The process takes +/- 12 minutes.
Message: iPhone has been updated and restarts.

And then it went wrong. After restarting I got the following error message in iTunes: We could not complete your iTunes Store request, the network connection was reset. After completing you get this message: iPhone has been updated, restarts and asks for an iTunes connection. Now your iPhone runs the latest firmware and should be activated.
