iPhone tips and tricksBrussels / 23 April 2008 / R.Bollen
Our faithful reader Raoul Urlings, has send us this tip to activate the voicemail button on jailbroken iPhones. Normally this button is assigned to Visual Voicemail, which is not supported by other Carriers then the official ones, that work together with Apple Inc.

Just type the code shown in the image and replace the last 5555 with the number you normally dial to hear your voicemail. 5555 is Mobistar Belgium, Proximus Belgium is 1230 and Base has 1955. Some providers require the full number instead.

This is not new but not yet posted here!

There’s lots of different solutions on the net. I had to collect them all before I could get rid of my problems, which were:

Error: Package Download Failed
Error: Main Script Execution Failed

Both seemed to be the end result of corrupt permissions. I used ZiPhone to Jailbreak a clean 1.1.4 install and was disappointed when I hit them. Here’s what I had to do to fix them:

The iPhone and iPod touch are almost indistinguishable devices except for one major difference—you can make calls from your iPhone, and you can’t from your iPod touch. For the privilege of making phone calls with your iPhone, you have to pay $100 more upfront to Apple for the device itself, plus a minimum of $60/month to AT&T for the next two years.

The more we love the iPhone the more we have to admit that iTunes sync features are not really satisfactory (to put it mildly). The thing is that when you want to synchronize your bookmarks you can do that with IE or bookmark pages on iPhone directly. As you might have already noticed the above mentioned option didn’t include Mozilla Firefox bookmarks and this web-browser is widely used.

I have a small iPhone tip that I think is pretty useful. When your iPhone logs on to a WiFi network, it automatically stops using Edge. Sometimes, you just tried a few open wifi networks trying to get internet, but none of them actually had internet access. The problem is that when you get back to this place, your iPhone will automatically log on to this network and you’ll lose Edge access.

The ‘Find Me’ location feature in Google Maps on the iPhone and iPod touch is great, but if you are in an area with wireless access points that have yet to be mapped by Skyhook (the company that provides the location-acces point data for Apple), your shown location will rely upon cellphone tower position alone and so be far less accurate.

Recently, Jazzdogg on the Australian MacTalk forum contacted Skyhook with regard to manually submitting the longitude/latitude of his own access point to improve the location feature.

As much as we love the Apple iPhone, we’re the first to admit that its iTunes synchronisation options are pretty inadequate.

The problem is that it can only sync internet bookmarks with Internet Explorer and while it’s easy enough to create and manage bookmarks on the iPhone, we’d much rather sync our bookmarks from Firefox.

Problems loggin on to your iPhone with Term-vt100?

Here’s the solution:

First install the following tools on your iPhone:

- OpenSSH
- BSD Subsystem

Then ssh into your iPhone from your Mac (Terminal) or PC (Putty) and issue a couple of commands to fix an issue not being setted properly with the SUID.

Perform those steps:

- Connect your iPhone to your wireless network.

- Check your iPhone’s wifi settings te retrieve the ip-address.

- Start Terminal (enter ssh root@xx.xx.xx.xx) or Putty (enter the iPhone ip-address in the hostname box).

- You will probably get a popup/error (authentication), simply click or type yes, then login with the username “root” and the password “alpine”.

- You are now logged into your iPhone with root access.

Now you need to create a directory where we will create a symbolic link inside, issue the following command:

- mkdir -p /usr/local/arm-apple-darwin/lib

The -p flag saves us creating each sub directory.

Now you need to create a symbolic link to the file libgcc_s.1.dylib located in /usr/lib/. Issue the following command:

- ln -sf /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib /usr/local/arm-apple-darwin/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib

The -s creates a symbolic link while -f forces the link to be made even if there is a file there with that name.

Now you need to change the permissions of the Term-vt100 executable, issue the following command:

- chmod +s /Applications/Term-vt100.app/Term-vt100

Ready! The problem should be fixed and all that is required is a restart of the Term-vt100 app.

You should now be able to log in to your iPhone with the password alpine (default user is root).

Getting contacts off your old mobile phone and onto the iPhone may or may not be a straightforward process. If you already have your contacts stored neatly in Outlook (Windows), Address Book (Mac) or a Yahoo! Address Book (Mac/Windows), the process is as simple as syncing via iTunes.

In an effort to make typing on the iPhone more familiar, the University of Glasgow has unveiled a hack that provides vibration feedback when a virtual key is pressed, simulating the effect of typing on a real keyboard. The patch enables what the University calls haptic feedback, which researchers say can help improve typing speeds, while simultaneously reducing errors.

As far back as July, 2007, iPhone Atlas readers reported an issue in which Yahoo! email accounts do not push messages to the iPhone.

Yahoo! Mail accounts are the only type of accounts currently accessible by the iPhone that offer push services. This, in theory, means that you will be instantly notified when a new message lands in your Yahoo!

Way back, one of our readers begged for an iPhone LoJack solution. He wanted his iPhone to “call home” regularly in case of loss or, let’s be more realistic, theft. Over the past week, I finally had a chance to give this request some time, and I put together findme. It’s a command-line program that returns the location of the cell phone tower nearest to your iPhone.

Here’s a life-changing tip for iPhone owners from physics professor Richard Muller:

Dear David,

One feature I really miss on my iPhone is a feature of my old cellphone: “vibrate THEN ring.” I like to sit in a meeting and feel the vibration, get up and leave with nobody knowing why. But sometimes I am walking or otherwise active, and I don’t feel the vibrate; sometimes I have left the phone recharging, and I don’t feel the vibrate. So what I really miss is 10 seconds of vibration followed by a loud ring.
