Today Apple introduced the next major milestone in the iPhone series with iPhone 4. Apple has unveiled its new iPhone 4 after a couple wild, unprecedented months of leaks. Sure, it looks exactly like we expected it to (Steve compares it to an old Leica camera), with a glass front and back, but it’s what’s on the inside that counts, kids. The stainless steel band that goes around the phone is an antenna system, while also providing the main structure of the phone, though it’s plugged into the same old GSM / UMTS radio you all know and love—there’s a reason they didn’t call it the iPhone 4G.

Like the Ushahidi crowdsourcing platform that’s aiding relief efforts in Haiti, the new Oil Reporter app for the iPhone and Android phones lets people log “reports” on the many impacts of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a free app, and the goal is to grow the body of crowdsourced documentation for what many are calling the worst environmental disaster in history.

Despite a larger variety of devices running the Google Android operating system available on the market, Apple’s iPhone operating system still outgained its rival in terms of Web presence in the month of May.

New statistics released this week by Net Applications show that Apple increased its mobile browser share from 30.3 percent a month prior to 32.8 percent in May. During the same time, Android also grew, but by a smaller amount—from 5.3 percent to 6.2 percent.
