IN MARCH, ONE DAY BEFORE THE RELEASE of the iPad 3, iFixit cofounder Luke Soules traveled 17 hours from San Luis Obispo, California, to Melbourne, Australia, so that he could be the first person in the world—literally—to purchase one. Then, wielding a heat gun, some high-powered suction cups, eight guitar picks, a Phillips screwdriver, and a flat-headed tool called a spudger, he proceeded to gut the thing part by part, tweeting out photos as he did.

As expected, sales of the iPhone 5 have pushed Apple (AAPL) back into the lead in the race for U.S. smartphone sales, according to a report issued Tuesday by Kantar Worldpanel. The London-based consumer research firm found that Apple accounted for 48.1% of U.S. smartphone unit sales in the 12-week period between Aug. 5 and Oct. 28.

A 36-year-old Quincy man was assaulted during an attempted purchase of an iPhone 5 on Hobart Avenue in Braintree on Saturday night. Two people – an unknown man and a 27-year-old Boston woman – allegedly robbed the man and struck him, sending the Quincy man to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Chief Russell Jenkins said in a statement.

Now, photos have emerged of posters hung around the Menlo Park, Calif. headquarters of Facebook, which further urge employees to make the switch that they’re calling ‘Droidfooding — as in testing your own product.

David Sobotta was a sales executive at Apple from 1984 to 2004, and, though he hasn’t worked under Tim Cook’s leadership or reported directly to him, claims to have had a lot of contact with the new CEO, who took over from the company’s late co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011.

Jeff found this story intriguing, beacuse he was facing a similar problem.
