Apple CEO Tim Cook has stated that OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays are awful. Just over a week ago I ran the numbers on a bigger screen iPhone, and presented several ways Apple could go, including just taking the current screen and stretching it out to almost 5-inches, which would give it the same 264ppi pixel density as the Retina iPad 4 screen. It wasn’t long ago that people were screaming that Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) was headed to $1,000 a share, and that the iPhone 5 would propel the shares further into the stratosphere. I was one of the few dissenting voices at the time who stated that Apple’s ultra-high margins were a result of being first to market with incredible new and novel products, and invariably, where there are large profits, the competition swoops in like a laser beam to try to get in on the action, which works out nicely for consumers.

This week, Apple announced that during the last three months of 2012, it earned more money than any other non-oil company has ever earned in a single quarter. (Gazprom, Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil have each topped Apple’s earnings one time.) What’s more, during all of 2012, Apple’s profits topped $41.7 billion, which is also a record for any firm outside the oil industry. (ExxonMobil earned a few billion more in 2006, 2007, and 2008.)

Sequentially we increased over 70 percent from the September quarter, which was 3.5 times the market, and so we could not be happier with that. In terms of geographic distribution, we saw our highest growth in China, and it was into the triple digits. And so I would characterize it as we’re extremely pleased.
