At GDC Europe earlier this week, Bigpoint CEO Heiko Hubertz claimed that the iPhone app market “has already crashed. You cannot sell your game for 99 cents and expect a return.” Apple has said that developers are collectively making more than a billion dollars on the App Store, but Hubertz knocks that figure down a few notches, suggesting that because there are over 250,000 actual apps on the store, no one developer is making enough to cover the development costs of any game worth making.

Microsoft has been throwing around cash lately to help bolster the application offerings for Windows Phone 7. Compared to Android and iPhone application stores. Windows Mobile’s library is at best anemic. To make matters worse, everything has to be rewritten for WP7. Microsoft seems to be taking the “if you want things done right, do it yourself” approach to filling the library.

You’ve got to wait a couple weeks to get this if you’re the run-of-the-mill iPhone type—but if you’ve ponied up the Benjamin for an iPhone Developer Program membership (who’s probably suffered through a handful of iPhone OS 4 beta builds over the last few months), you’re now able to download the Gold Master seed of iOS 4 directly from Apple’s site. Let us know if you manage to sprout a front-facing cam on your 3GS to test FaceTime or anything cool like that, alright?

Now that the iPhone SDK has officially been released and the Apple App Store is open for business, it??™s time to write killer mobile applications! To do that, you??™ll need to use several powerful (and possibly unfamiliar) tools: Xcode, Interface Builder, Objective-C, and then the iPhone SDK itself. It can all be a little overwhelming at first.

Apple could avoid a possible FTC antitrust investigation by changing the terms of the iPhone 4.0 SDK, insiders said Monday night. The FTC would supposedly leave Apple alone if it let developers write iPhone apps using other tools, such as Adobe’s Flash CS5 or MonoTouch. How likely this would be wasn’t described.

News of Apple’s iPad, the forthcoming release of the iPhone OS 4.0 software update and the surrounding hype of it all has been hard to avoid. According to third party developers, the new form factor and new features have brought new opportunities. While plenty point to multitasking as the most exciting new feature, Daniel Bradby, application developer and co-founder of application development company JTribe, said he is excited about the possibilities of augmented reality (AR) on the iPhone.

I heard that Google was reaching out to iPhone App developers not too long ago, and now it appears that the company is at it again. After all, who could blame them? The App Store is a huge success and while Android is catching on, it still doesn’t have the same penetration as the iPhone OS.

The iPad offers developers a large touchscreen and enough power to do something interesting with it. With the tight time constraints to launch a game before launch, it’s no surprise that so many of the best games are upgraded versions of titles that have already found success on the iPhone.

Bringing a game from the iPhone to the iPad isn’t just about updating the graphics a bit; the ergonomics of the new device and how you use it also must be considered. We caught up with Firemint CEO Rob Murray, whose company developed Real Racing HD and Flight Control HD on the iPad, to talk about bringing hit games over to the new platform.

You’ve surely heard of Silverlight, Microsoft’s shinier and altogether more-fluffy answer to Flash.

Silverlight is now at the stage where the only real feature it lacks is ubiquity—the only real reason we keep using Flash is because the plug-in is installed on almost every computer in the world.

How many times has a friend showed you his or her favorite new iPhone app, and you lamented: Why didn’t I think of that?

In the 1999 movie Fight Club, Brad Pitt famously tells a huddle of pugilistic aspirants: “The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club.”

Apple’s iPhone Developer Program License Agreement phrases that sentiment differently, but its directive to iPhone developers is essentially the same:

Atomicon, in association with the Iconfactory and DS Media Labs, has released the original soundtrack for the hit iPhone game “Ramp Champ”, representing a new source of music for gamers, and a new source of revenue for musicians and composers. As a digital-only release, and available through the iTunes music store, the album fits neatly within the iTunes ecosystem, enabling game and music fans to easily purchase the soundtrack directly though the game. “We’re very excited about the possibility of accessing music fans from right inside the game. The ability to have in-game purchasing, or even just a link directly to the iTunes store, which downloads straight to the user’s music library, all within the same device, is really pretty cool,” says David Weiner, executive producer and composer at Atomicon, which released the album.
