A quick, very cheap, easy-to-undo and safe way of making the iPhone 4 work with the TomTom car kit / mount from the 3G/3GS. All it takes is a tiny strip of foam rubber about 2mm thick and the iPhone 4 fits into the mount perfectly.
Berlin, Germany - After a solid seven figure investment by angel investors and fending off a lawsuit by former parent company Navigon, Skobbler releases an update to its popular and free turn-by-turn navigation system for the iPhone that incorporates a completely new user interface, full iOS4 compatibility, and significant stability improvements.
The long-awaited 1.4 update for the TomTom iPhone app is now available to download from the App Store for free.
As previously reported, new features include support for multi-tasking (only on iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd Generation devices, running iOS 4) and turn-by-turn guidance at the same time as operating other apps. The free update will also include the latest GeoSmart map of New Zealand.
Many have asked if the square on the centre of the dashboard can be used to mount a SatNav or TV screen. While this mod doesn’t exactly do that, it shows you what you can potentially do around that area! I ended up mounting closer to the vents as I can’t see the small screen that well mounting on the flat square part.
Prices for iPhone Navigation have been steadily dropping, but a small developer out of Germany has done them one better. Free. Really free. No in-app purchases, no subscriptions, and so far, no ads.
The app is called Skobbler US. It works on the iPhone 3G and the 3GS. The map data comes from OpenStreetMap, a sort of Wikipedia for maps.

Google has confirmed plans to deliver its free turn-by-turn navigation app to other smartphones, such as the iPhone.

TomTom has confirmed to Pocket-lint that it has submitted a new version of its iPhone GPS app, version 1.3, to Apple for approval.
