Is the iPhone a GPL violator?

No, not that iPhone.

I’m talking about the real iPhone, the Cisco iPhone, sometimes called the WIP300. (There it is at left. You can see what all the excitement is about.)

Slashdot has Armijn Hemel of the GPL Violations Project saying some source code for the Linux-based phone has not been published, which is a violation of the license agreement.

Apple’s Morning-After iPhone Headache

Apple Inc. is having a bad day after a spectacular evening when it reported a blowout financial performance. Sold more iPods (21 million), and Macs, banked billions in cash and what not. However, like all of us who have had a bottle of wine (or two), they are waking up with a hangover. The outlook for the second quarter of fiscal 2007 isn’t so rosy, and as a result the stock is down almost 4 percent, and still heading south.

Apple shares slip as light outlook disappoints

Shares of Apple Inc. (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile , Research) fell 3.6 percent in early trading on Thursday, a day after the maker of Macintosh computers and iPod digital music players delivered forecasts that fell short of Wall Street estimates.
The decline comes despite Apple’s report that fourth-quarter profit jumped 78 percent and iPod sales topped 21 million, both beating analysts’ expectations. Macintosh computer sales also rose but were lighter than expected, analysts said.

Now, `it’s all about the iPhone’

Apple had good and bad financial news Wednesday, but all that analysts seemed to want to discuss was something the company wouldn’t talk much about: its new iPhone.
Buoyed by strong holiday sales of iPods and notebook computers, Apple posted record quarterly earnings and profit, blowing through Wall Street expectations.

iPhone’s downsized wide screen

It appears that Apple’s uberdevice utilizes a totally proprietary 1.5:1 aspect ratio. While that’s wider than the standard square-ish 1.33:1 (4x3) aspect ratio found on older TVs, PC monitors, and iPods, it’s 15 percent narrower than the 1.78:1 (16x9) screen dimensions found on most HDTV and DVD programming.
