Charlie Mallow reviewed the much hyped, Toki Tori game by Chillingo / Two Tribes

If your in the mood for a great puzzler, you have found it. Originally created for the Game Boy color, this app from Two Tribes is more than just a port. Its a well written endearing game that seems to have as much fun as you do. Eighty stages of game play, a nice sound track, slick graphics and a strong user interface make this game well worth the $4.99. Two Tribes earned their money with this one.

The premise of the game is easy enough, your mission is to rescue eggs by finding your way through a puzzle. The game reminds me of a bit of Donkey Kong with a real fun twist. Unlike the classic game, its not clear which way to go and your also not going to make it to the next stage without a trick or two. The game does give you a real quick preview of the stage before the action starts but, it is sometimes not as easy as it sounds. If you need a closer look you can drag your way around the stage by using two fingers. The controls are simplistic and you don’t have to give them much thought.

Your hero in this puzzler is a cute yellow bird that has some amazing tricks. He can climb ladders, build bridges, operate a freeze gun, teleport and he has just enough wing strength to land softly. Each stage offers only a limited amount of special moves to help you find your way through, so be careful not to waste anything from your bag of tricks. Again the controls are perfect and a real strong point of the game, one touch is all it takes to move your character. Movement is made easy by the excellent pathing ability, Toki Tori can find his way without too much direction from you.  Although, if you do lose your way the game does give you the option of a quick restart or to skip a level and come back.

This game is perfect for the Iphone. The character is adorable and playing brings a smile to your face. On the game play side, it is broken down into many short levels perfect for a short train ride or for wasting a few minutes here and there when you need to keep busy. With thousands of games available at the App store at this point, i think its safe to say Toki Tori is a must have. The game is absolutely perfect and earned each and every one of its five stars.

Five of Five Stars.
