free iphone games to playNot all games have been optimized for the iPhone equally. In fact, I found quite a few clunkers that seemed to exist only to take your cash, advertise dubious services, or bombard you with cut-rate graphics. Shudder. These five games, added just this month, test your strategy and timing while offering above-average graphics.

Physics was one of the few subjects in college we didn’t fail (with English, Math, Philosophy, Psychology and Philosophy rounding out the list of ones we did), so we take exceptional interest in this iPhysics game.

Every once in a while, iPod owners get word of a new game release for their devices. But some iPod owners are still being denied the ability to play games on their iPods. I’m speaking, of course, about the iPod touch and iPhone, neither of which has the ability to play current iPod games.

In a small bit of programming wizardry that’s sure to make some of Apple’s offerings more interesting, the ScummVM engine has been ported over to both the iPhone and iPod touch. Best known as the engine that ran some of LucasArts’ best old-school adventure games, ScummVM can now be run in teeny-weeny eyestrain-o-vision for those lucky enough to possess the necessary hardware.

For those of you with hacked Mobile OSX units, your choice of emulators is no longer limited to the NES variety. You may have noticed gpSPhone.app in Installer recently, but it has nothing to do with GPS or calling.

It is actually a Game Boy Advance emulator, and it’s been available for a short time now.

A group of iPhone hackers has just released version 0.0.5 of gpSPhone. gpSPhone is a GameBoy Advanced emulator for iPhone. As with all first releases, it’s still a bit on the iffy side. Although “many games are playable”, sound output is pretty awful and the GUI and instructions are being worked on. If you feel like giving this a try, here are a few things you really need to know:

I recently got an iTouch to dev on. I have my toolchain up and going and am working on a few projects for this very powerful handheld.
iPhone software can be used on the iTouch and vise versa. Not only does this iTouch handheld support a really nice hi-res touchscreen, but also OpenGLES video hardware acceleration, but also a powerful 533MHz ARM11 CPU based on the SAMSUNG S3C6400 SoC!

Apple is set to use its iPhone take on Nintendo in the video games sector, according to the latest from the industry’s rumour mill.

However, a report in the New York Post today suggests that Apple has its sights firmly set on becoming a significant player in the market for “casual games” exploited by Nintendo’s phenomenally successful Wii and DS devices.

iPhone NES emulator marioA native NES emulator for the iPhone, currently using the InfoNES core. Video of the emulator in action can be viewed at http://youtube.com/watch?v=LVh429Dp7r0

My first version can be downloaded from code.google
NerveGas has a fast version (with a busted palette) at iphone.natetrue (His source will be rolled into SVN soon)

Presently there is no sound, and the emulator is a little slow (most likely due to the way I’m drawing onto the screen). And the control is a bit iffy (using an image of an actual controller, while cute, sucks).
