Web-apps promised to make native mobile applications a dying breed. But, with web-apps requiring a constant wireless connection and the need to run within a mobile web browser, native applications are still running strong. But, with the iPhone 2.1 OS, Apple has taken the first step to making web-applications just as powerful and convenient as natively installed mobile applications.

InfoWorld has been all over this week’s official launch of Android, the new smartphone platform from Google. With its slick interface and open application platform, Android shows every sign of giving Apple’s iPhone a run for its money when the first phones begin shipping in late October.

As my colleague Tom Yager points out, however, “If you can’t get coders on board, you’re sunk.”

The situation regarding Apple’s App Store for the iPhone is getting weirder by the day. Several applications have been rejected from the App Store based on seemingly dubious claims such as duplication of functionality (even though they didn’t duplicate anything), or alikeness to default applications.

Apple sparked controversy in mid-2004 when it demonstrated Dashboard, a feature included with Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), which shipped the following year. September 19, 2008 (Computerworld) A week after Apple Inc. rejected his iPhone application and barred it from selling on the App Store, developer Alex Sokirynsky has turned to a little-known, but still Apple Inc.-approved, distribution channel to sell his work.

Sokirynsky, who in August submitted his Podcaster application to Apple for inclusion in the company’s App Store—the company’s online iPhone mart where programs can be downloaded, some for free and some not—received the rejection notice last Thursday.

Software developer Mike Ash just outlined the 22 steps he went through to get his application onto your iPhone.

Development for iPhone is an incredibly difficult process, much more difficult than it needs to be. The arduous process of shipping an application for the Mac suddenly appears to be absolutely straightforward after going through this mess. I really don’t envy those companies who have staked their success to the iPhone platform. The amount of arbitrary hassle, uncertainty, and delay in the process can only feel vastly worse when your livelihood depends on it.

As we’ve said before, Apple’s iPhone app store is Apple’s app store, which means it can block any app it wants for any reason it wants. That’s the deal, and developers knew that from the beginning.

But Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone app vetting strategy—a black box, with little to no communication with developers—continues to reinforce the need for a better set of guidelines, a better feedback loop, and some kind of appeals court.

About 2 weeks ago one of my team members, Robin Eggenkamp, mentioned there would be some iPhone dev ‘conference’ this month (iPhone Dev Camp, Amsterdam), originally at the building exactly opposite of the building where our own office is. Since I’m always interested in anything related to development I agreed to tag along. I expected it to be the kind of event where some talks are organized with a small hands on lab where some expert developer teaches newbies how to get up and running.

SAN FRANCISCO—By creating games and other programs for the iPhone, software developers hoped to find millions of new customers. But they didn’t expect to feel muzzled.

The software development kit that Apple Inc. distributed to programmers bound them to not discuss the process of creating programs for the iPhone. Companies typically waive such legal restrictions once the product in question launches, but Apple didn’t. And it won’t say why.

Gracias. Crsitina
