There are rumors going around the web that the totally irrelevant release of Leopard might also give way to the iPhone being opened up to 3rd-party developers for new applications. Apparently, Apple will not fully open its iPhone platform to all the developers, but at least initially, to the major software companies.

Oliver Starr, a friend who is now offering his considerable expertise to Blognation, writes that he has witnessed the first ever VoIP calls made from an Apple iPhone.

This has been accomplished by TruPhone, a softphone VoIP solutions provider based in the UK.

Not even ready for beta, what I have just referenced is a rather pre-alpha cross-your-fingers-and-hope-it-works setup that, Starr writes in part:

When the iPhone was released, one of the main complaints was the lack of a fully functional chat client, since Apple chose to release only the SMS program. Then came Apollo and added a client to AIM. That was very frustrating for me, because nobody uses that in my circle of friends, so I couldn’t use my iPhone to talk using instant messaging.

The plethora of 3rd Applications on the iPhone and the wee bit of space left on the homescreen leaves a lot to be desired and I mean a lot. Fortunately for you, your fix of 3rd party App goodness won’t be stopped any time soon and these App launchers will allow you to splurge to your heart’s content

eyetvElgato’s EyeTV software lets users watch, record and schedule TV on their Macs, as well as transfer recordings to the iPod. I’ve got an EyeTV Hybrid connected to my G4 iMac and it works wonderfully, despite the older processor and modest video card (64 MB DDR RAM). Our own Mike Rose wrote a thorough review in March which you can read here.

This is the first blog post in a series that I plan on writing about iPhone application development. The first thing you should know is that these blog posts will not cover anything related to taking existing content sites and making them more “iPhone-friendly”. While I think that is a valuable topic, it has little interest to me as a programmer.

This is very fun, it’s an iPhone smudge and scratch simulator! It even has a cute little cleaning cloth to wipe the fingerprints away. Given the way most consumer-electronics smudge up, someone really needs to come up with a smudge-resistant surface. C’mon nanotechnology, where are you now ‘eh?!

Mac developers are trying to make an end-run around Apple, and some estimate that there are more than 100 iPhone applications available today that run directly on the OS.

Despite discouragement from Apple, some Mac developers are determined to make it possible to easily install and run non-Apple-approved iPhone applications that communicate directly with the smart phone’s operating system.

Although it’s a super- early beta and doesn’t really work all that well, this iSaber app actually turns your iPhone into a lightsaber. The developer, who made the MacSaber and the WiiSaber, has tapped into the iPhone’s accelerometer and designed the app to have your phone make lightsaber noises when you swing it around like a nerdy Canadian

People are clamoring on the iPhone buzz to get developers using their products for iPhone development.

Two early IDE folk are Morfik and Aptana:

Aptana iPhone Support

We’ve released the first beta of our iPhone Development Plugin for the Aptana IDE. Since ‘Web 2.0’ is the development model of choice for the iPhone, and that is what the Aptana IDE is all about, it made sense that we’d support it in every way we could. For this first beta, here are the features we have (and some that are coming):

Apple has released an update to iTunes that blocks users from creating free custom ringtones and then syncing them to an iPhone. Despite Apple’s best efforts to thwart users, a workaround has already been found and posted to the Internet.

A method of using iTunes to create ringtones for the iPhone using songs not purchased from the iTunes Store was first posted by Macrumors.com on Friday. Users confirmed after installing iTunes 7.4.1 last night that the method no longer worked.

The Nullriver iPhone Installer application is an ingenious piece of coding. It basically allows you to modify your iPhone and add different applications natively on the iPhone’s filesystem - forget those web-apps.

But, what do we do about the limited iPhone homescreen real estate?

A Rochester, N.Y.-based solution provider and software developer has built a proof-of-concept iPhone portal page that would allow Web-based printing, workflow and document management over the Apple device, through a Web page that is built to carry the same look and feel as Apple’s phone-and-Internet device.
Rochester Software Associates, which has partnerships with document companies including Xerox, Canon, Konica Minolta and others, said Friday that it will display the technology during an upcoming conference in Chicago.
