This little tutorial is for users, of AT&T ONLY, who unlocked their iPhones to work with 3rd party apps. If you have a bricked iPhone this tutorial will not work for you. To revert your firmware from version 1.1.1 (because you would rather have 3rd party apps. instead of the mobile iTunes Music Store) just follow these steps.

Two new apparent unlocking solutions for Apple’s iPhone firmware v1.1.2 have surfaced, allowing owners of the cellular handset to sign up for wireless service with carriers other than Apple’s exclusive partners. The new techniques, dubbed SonicSIM and StealthSIM, both claim to unlock iPhone v1.1.2 for use with all wireless carriers that use the same technology as Apple’s cellphone.

The ability to add a preference setting in the keyboard menu that would affect auto correction was discoverd by “Zhivago” in this thread. I’m providing a modified .plist file to work with 1.1.2 firmware. You can’t use older keyboard.plist files without reediting them. I will show you two methods for performing this hack, an easy method and a more moderately difficult method.

This tutorial will explain how to use the serial RX and TX lines on the Iphone as a standard UART serial port. Software on the Iphone can access the UART using the same libraries and functions as in any UNIX software, but there is a small trick that needs to be done on the hardware end to gain access to the port. If you try to simply send data to the RX line on the iPhone, the iPhone will freeze and have to be rebooted.

With a few iPhones floating around the office, and no iTunes enabled Starbucks in sight – we were feeling a bit disenfranchised up here in lovely Cambridge. Given that, and our love of “just in time” information, we felt we had to take matters into our own hands. And so we did.

People buying new iPhones with 1.1.2 software will find that it’s not possible to install applications, like the must-have LucasArts game emulator. This video tutorial will teach you how to easily install applications and bypass activation in the iPhone. It’s not as straightforward as previous versions, but anyone can follow it.

In an effort to keep up with Apple’s changes at a faster speed, the iPhone Dev Team is considering open sourcing AnySIM, the free unlocking solution for the iPhone. In an exclusive talk with Gizmodo, iPhone Dev Team member Sam said that this move could “open a lot of possibilities for the future,” mainly in terms of the speed of the updates and avoiding sloppy and possibly dangerous binary patches:

Before you all start thinking I’m going crazy and say mean things like “He’s Nuts!” and “Hasn’t this been posted before?”, let me explain; please. I recently (and foolishly) upgraded to 1.1.2 on my iPod touch because I wanted to see the non-existent new features it brought.

Yes, it gave me the much desired calendar “Add” button and yes, it gave me the useless battery indicator in iTunes, but I already had the Calendar button and had no need for the battery indicator, so I set on my mission to downgrade back to 1.1.1.

The one thing about the iPhone v1.1.2 jailbreak was that it only worked with legit, AT&T activated iPhones on Intel-based Mac machines. Well that’s all changed with the newest update to the iPhone v1.1.2 jailbreak.

One statistic that many people (including Apple) would like to see is just how many people are hacking into their iPhones or iPod touches. Apple previously estimated that one-sixth of iPhones sold were being unlocked, with the number of jailbroken phones presumably being larger.

Third-party applications for the iPhone won’t be released until early next year, but there’s an easy-to-install new jailbreaking application out this week if you can’t wait.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog, source of much of the details behind The Great iPhone Hack 2007, brings news of the release of the AppSnapp installer, which bypasses Apple’s OS X 1.1.1 update in order to let iPhone and iPod Touch users put third-party applications on their devices.

t could look like pretty much anything, even The Matrix (as shown here), it all depends on the owner. The look and feel of the hacked iPhone and iPod touch interface is completely customizable, not to mention you can install any combination of 3rd party apps on it which are all available through the latest Installer.app.

TUAW’s Erica Sadun has single-handedly unraveled the Objective-C classes that go into the iPhone’s header files, providing the world with an invaluable insight into the nuts and bolts of how native applications can be built on Apple’s magic slab. It’s a little bit like getting part of the coming SDK’s manual, five months early.

Before you hit that ‘Upgrade’ button, here are a few items of community interest to consider.1. It’s a one-way street. You cannot downgrade the firmware back to 1.0.2, not even using the alt-Restore trick that lets you pick an ipsw file to restore from.

iPod Touch“Columbus Day was a busy one for the two dozen or so renegade programmers who have taken it upon themselves to re-do what Apple undid with its latest software update for the iPhone. Firmware update 1.1.1, released 10 days earlier, had wiped out virtually every unauthorized program written for the device,” Phillip Elmer-Dewitt reports for Fortune.
