The iPhone Dev Team did it again. Using the iPhone SDK, they were able to hack into the included 2.0 version of the firmware and unlock it. It is completely jailbroken. And it ain’t even public yet. Since the iPhone hacking community already has Apple by the, uh, stem, why doesn’t Apple just give up and let them develop for the iPhone as they wish? Because, Steve Jobs, you’ve lost.

Apple has released the 1.1.4 software update for the iPhone, listing “bug fixes” in the change notes. Surprisingly, one bug it neglected to fix is the ability to Jailbreak the iPhone. Jailbreaking is the name of a hack to allow access to the iPhone and iPod Touch file systems, essential for installing third party applications.

Before the iPhone came about, Pavel Zaboj, founder of the firm Bladox in Prague, sold relatively low quantities of a chip called a “Turbo SIM,” designed to let cell phones use multiple networks. However, when it was discovered the chip could unlock iPhones, his company was inundated with thousands of orders. AriX and Ben have announced the immediate availability of iJailBreak 0.5.1, the latest version of the open source Mac OS X jailbreaking utility. iJailBreak 0.5.1 allows iPhone (and soon iPod Touch) users the ability to jailbreak, and if so desired, unlock and “hactivate,” their device in mere minutes. Currently iJailBreak 0.5.1 is an Intel-architecture only application that supports Mac OS X Tiger and Leopard.

This process also works for other firmware versions, however iJailBreak 0.5.x was written with 1.1.3 in mind, thus it’s suggested that you only use iJailBreak 0.5.x for 1.1.3. Note that the unlock only works for iPhones with Boot Loader 4.6 (all iPhones that came pre-loaded with 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 have Boot Loader 4.6).

iJailBreak 0.5.x fixes many of the issues found with the “1.1.3 Soft Upgrade"-based method, including the inability to play some DRMed music. Those who have used the 1.1.3 Soft Upgrade include users of iJailBreak 0.4.x and iJailBreakMobile 1.0.

Earlier this week, ZiPhone was released and was the first tool available that provided not only a direct jailbreak for iPhones running 1.1.3, but did so in one step. Though pretty darn convenient, ZiPhone was still a command line application, which can scare off some of the less technically inclined iPhone owners out there.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - January 27, 2008 - AriX, the 13-year old developer behind the open source iJailBreak utility downloaded over 200,000 times, has announced that iJailBreak 0.4 has been released. iJailBreak 0.4 allows iPhone and iPod Touch users on jailbroken versions of firmware 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 to automatically update to and jailbreak the newly released 1.1.3 firmware.

Having just received a brand new iPhone (to replace my original after the touchscreen stopped working) I have been loathe to do anything nasty to it. It still has that new iPhone smell. The buttons are still crispy and sharp. It doesn’t have any of the distinct “character” marks on the corners from various (ahem!) interactions with pavement.

Stealth SIM requires no modification of the baseband on your phone. This makes it the safest way to unlock your phone.

Modifying your Baseband invalidates your warranty. But worse still it is the most common cause of damage to iPhones. Attempts to modify the Baseband can trigger security mechanisms which can render your phone useless, commonly referred to as bricking. Moreover, even if your phone works initially, future updates from Apple could brick your phone.

It has been widely reported recently that iPhone sold as “unlocked” via Orange in France are not truly unlocked. Early reports indicated that this was because of a SIM country lock in effect on the unlocked phones. As it turns out, there is no actual country lock in effect, but due to either intentional crippling on Apple’s part or simply a lack of proper support - unlocked 1.1.2 French iPhones crash when attempting to make calls or send text messages when a foreign SIM card is inserted.
