The iPhone Dev Team did it again. Using the iPhone SDK, they were able to hack into the included 2.0 version of the firmware and unlock it. It is completely jailbroken. And it ain’t even public yet. Since the iPhone hacking community already has Apple by the, uh, stem, why doesn’t Apple just give up and let them develop for the iPhone as they wish? Because, Steve Jobs, you’ve lost.

Apple has released the 1.1.4 software update for the iPhone, listing “bug fixes” in the change notes. Surprisingly, one bug it neglected to fix is the ability to Jailbreak the iPhone. Jailbreaking is the name of a hack to allow access to the iPhone and iPod Touch file systems, essential for installing third party applications.

Before the iPhone came about, Pavel Zaboj, founder of the firm Bladox in Prague, sold relatively low quantities of a chip called a “Turbo SIM,” designed to let cell phones use multiple networks. However, when it was discovered the chip could unlock iPhones, his company was inundated with thousands of orders. What followed was a roller coaster ride of supply and demand that’s left Zaboj sick of dealing with the iPhone.

AriX and Ben have announced the immediate availability of iJailBreak 0.5.1, the latest version of the open source Mac OS X jailbreaking utility. iJailBreak 0.5.1 allows iPhone (and soon iPod Touch) users the ability to jailbreak, and if so desired, unlock and “hactivate,” their device in mere minutes. Currently iJailBreak 0.5.1 is an Intel-architecture only application that supports Mac OS X Tiger and Leopard.

This process also works for other firmware versions, however iJailBreak 0.5.x was written with 1.1.3 in mind, thus it’s suggested that you only use iJailBreak 0.5.x for 1.1.3. Note that the unlock only works for iPhones with Boot Loader 4.6 (all iPhones that came pre-loaded with 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 have Boot Loader 4.6).

iJailBreak 0.5.x fixes many of the issues found with the “1.1.3 Soft Upgrade"-based method, including the inability to play some DRMed music. Those who have used the 1.1.3 Soft Upgrade include users of iJailBreak 0.4.x and iJailBreakMobile 1.0.

Earlier this week, ZiPhone was released and was the first tool available that provided not only a direct jailbreak for iPhones running 1.1.3, but did so in one step. Though pretty darn convenient, ZiPhone was still a command line application, which can scare off some of the less technically inclined iPhone owners out there.

In the immortal words of Proffesor Farnsworth: Good News Everyone. Those pesky 4.6 iPhones remained firmly locked down until just hours ago. The now world famous teen-superhero George Hotz (or to use his alias: GeoHot) has done what he himself described as the impossible, he unlocked the 4.6 bootloader.

Yesterday, Ste Packaging - the leading community sources repository for Installer.app and iPhone 3rd party apps - announced that the original jailbreak release for iPhone’s 1.1.3 firmware, from Nate True, had been removed from Installer.

Here is a part of the explanation of why Nate’s method was removed:

We’d be willing to bet that most iPhone owners out there that keep up to date with the iPhone-related posts have already jailbroken their iPhone v1.1.1. Further, chances are even better that iPhone v1.1.1 users have jailbroken their handsets using the Jailbreakme.com web-based solution.

Right now there exist approximately about 10 to 15 different guides on the web supposedly telling you how to upgrade to and jailbreak 1.1.3. The only problem with these guides is that while they for the most part contain much useful information, that information has to be pieced together like a puzzle from all the various guides. So, here you are - the definitive iPhone 1.1.3 firmware upgrade guide.

iPhone hacksPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania - January 27, 2008 - AriX, the 13-year old developer behind the open source iJailBreak utility downloaded over 200,000 times, has announced that iJailBreak 0.4 has been released. iJailBreak 0.4 allows iPhone and iPod Touch users on jailbroken versions of firmware 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 to automatically update to and jailbreak the newly released 1.1.3 firmware.

You might want to think twice about applying the current iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak “soft-update” (Mac or Windows) that was released (but not solely developed) by “Nate True.” We’ve received word that the method may prevent installation of official third-party applications that will be created by the forthcoming iPhone SDK (software development kit) from Apple. The reason: this jailbreak method breaks “Nikita,” a component that is responsible for installing signed software.

For those who have been following the online forums about the iPhone software unlock, you may have heard some conflicting reports. Recently, a video has been released showing a jailbreaked 1.1.3 iPod Touch! That means 1.1.3 has been in fact jailbreaked! Haven’t read about the 1.1.3 hardware unlock?

If for whatever reason you’ve upgraded your unit to firmware version 1.1.3 and wish to return to an earlier installation, you can. You won’t be able to use your iPhone, however, as a phone but only as a glorified iPod touch. Here, by popular request, is a quick how-to guide.

iPhone hacksX-SIM II, a flexible film adapter SIM card now available from One-Stop-China.com, makes it easier and more affordable than ever to “unlock” an Apple iPhone.

Unlocking an iPhone is nothing new. What is new is that the solution is no longer expensive and the phone can still be upgraded from Apple’s server after unlocked. X-SIM II allows individuals to use the Apple iPhone with different providers by bypassing the lock to work with the phone’s existing SIM card. This solution for iPhone users is available for only $45.21 USD.

Having just received a brand new iPhone (to replace my original after the touchscreen stopped working) I have been loathe to do anything nasty to it. It still has that new iPhone smell. The buttons are still crispy and sharp. It doesn’t have any of the distinct “character” marks on the corners from various (ahem!) interactions with pavement.

If a new iPhone or iPod touch found its way under your tree and you just can’t wait until Apple officially supports third-party application development to extend its functionality (who can wait until February?), it’s time you jailbreak your favorite new portable device.

iPhone HacksStealth SIM requires no modification of the baseband on your phone. This makes it the safest way to unlock your phone.

Modifying your Baseband invalidates your warranty. But worse still it is the most common cause of damage to iPhones. Attempts to modify the Baseband can trigger security mechanisms which can render your phone useless, commonly referred to as bricking. Moreover, even if your phone works initially, future updates from Apple could brick your phone.

It has been widely reported recently that iPhone sold as “unlocked” via Orange in France are not truly unlocked. Early reports indicated that this was because of a SIM country lock in effect on the unlocked phones. As it turns out, there is no actual country lock in effect, but due to either intentional crippling on Apple’s part or simply a lack of proper support - unlocked 1.1.2 French iPhones crash when attempting to make calls or send text messages when a foreign SIM card is inserted.
