While brainstorming about AIR with some people here in Seattle someone suggested taking applications that are specifically made for the iPhone’s web browser using iui and turning them into AIR applications.

By default the iPhone/iTouch’s Safari is pretty lame. Yes it is the best browser for mobile phones out there but it doesn’t have the power that the regular Safari can have.
Thanks to some Javascript bookmark hacks a lot of the missing functionality can be provided.

Picture it: you’re riding in the car and a great song comes on the radio. You’re dying to know what it is so you can go buy it ASAP but there’s no satellite radio receiver to tell you what’s playing.

While the iPhone certainly isn’t the first mobile handset to suffer from freezes, its functional breadth and the fact that many of its users install unsupported third-party applications make the device, generally, more freeze-prone.

As you know you can take advantage of the iPhone’s thumbnail system for your photos but what you need to know is that, you can do the same with your city’s subway map! Basically this map includes few sliced images from the actual subway map in such a way that you can pan across the map with the forward and back buttons.

Getting Things Done is David Allen’s system of personal productivity; a deceptively simple process of collecting information, deciding what it is, identifying what needs to be done and then doing it (we’ve written about GTD quite a bit).
Geeks like me love it because the hardware and/or software used to achieve these goals can be whatever we like. The most important thing is what David calls the “ubiquitous capture tool,” or “a way to write things down.” You’ve got your iPhone with you where ever you go, so why not use it?

I know a few people who have had Hotmail address for a long time and don’t want to change. They also have bought iPhones and now have no way to use the built-in client on the iPhone to read mail. This solutions lets them read Hotmail on their iPhone.

Installer is a great distribution service for iPhone users connecting Developers to an active community craving extended functionality. The default choices although great, don’t hold a candle to what additional sources have to offer.

If you’ve used the iPhone for any length of time at all then I’m sure you’ve become quite acustomed to the keyboard. What you might not know however is that there are a few tips you can use to increase your speed.

1. Remedy system lockups
Apple’s iPhone runs a scaled down version of Mac OS X, and, just like Mac OS X, problems occasionally occur. If your iPhone locks up on you, try pressing the Home button for six seconds. This will force quit the application you’re currently using. Still no response? Then press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the top of the iPhone for ten seconds. This will force the handset to restart.

It’s great that your iPhone has a data plan and a killer mobile browser, but when you’re sitting at the airport waiting to catch a plane with your laptop right next to you, wouldn’t it be nice to use your full-on desktop browser? Out of the box your iPhone won’t allow you to tether your EDGE data connection to another computer wirelessly, but with a little ingenuity on your part you’ll be browsing the net on your laptop through your iPhone’s data service in no time.

HandBrake is one of those applications that we adore here at TUAW HQ. It makes converting DVDs into a variety of digital files a snap (though only use it with DVDs you own. Don’t be pirates, kids). Chris Breen, of Macworld fame (and an amateur astronomer it would seem) shows us how to use HandBrake like a pro.

Several users are experiencing an issue where the iPhone synchronization (sync) process freezes partway through, never completing and sometimes causing a crash in iTunes. There are a few promising new fixes for this issue, as follows:

The Apple iPhone is making all sorts of top ten lists around this time of year and for good reason. It is a device that is reasonably innovative and it was marketed in the best way possible. Unfortunately, not all of us are willing to fork out over 40 bucks a month to keep this Apple addiction alive.

Flashcards are one of those things that haven’t been improved upon in recent history. In case you never had the wonderful opportunity to use flashcards during your academic career, they are simply pieces of card stock with a question on the front and an answer on the back that are used to memorize useless information that will never be needed again.

can concede that point, especially since I flew from Washington, D.C. to Providence without packing my iPhone’s sync cable or charger.
The actual sync cable and charger, I think they’re lying in a chair next to my Mac Pro. Not in my bag. In the chair.

Apple started selling iPhone ringtones for $2 apiece through its iTunes store last week, but if you aren’t afraid of a little tinkering, you can get that “Hey Ya” or “Sexy Back” ringtone without shelling out the extra bucks.
Users have to pay Apple $1 for a song, plus an extra $1 to convert that song into a ringtone. Of course, hackers immediately set out to find a way to generate iPhone ringtones for free.

I have spent the last couple weeks breaking the Iphone in every way possible. I Now have it running as a mail server. One of the great things about the iphone is that it is running mac os x leopard, which is just version 9 of the darwin kernel. That means that once you get out of the ch-rooted environment on the phone, you can install the BSD subsystem.

You probably thought exactly the same thing I did when I first saw Piet Jonas’ tip: the iPhone as a digital picture frame? That’s a pretty darn expensive digital picture frame. And his tip is pretty simple-- all he suggests is to turn off the AutoLock feature on the iPhone, thus leaving the screen on to display a slideshow. At first glance, it’s not that big a deal.
