Apple started selling iPhone ringtones for $2 apiece through its iTunes store last week, but if you aren’t afraid of a little tinkering, you can get that “Hey Ya” or “Sexy Back” ringtone without shelling out the extra bucks.
Users have to pay Apple $1 for a song, plus an extra $1 to convert that song into a ringtone. Of course, hackers immediately set out to find a way to generate iPhone ringtones for free.

Finally! Apple has added the capability to allow users to create their own ringtones in GarageBand and export them to the iPhone. You need to have the latest 4.1.1 version of GarageBand 8 running. It takes about 5 minutes from start to finish, and you can even use songs from your iTunes library.
It really is stupid easy.

In September, just before the 1.1.1 firmware release, getting free ringtones for your iPhone was as easy as crushing a small grape: the simply-titled MakeiPhoneRingtone (it did exactly what it said on the tin) could take any audio file on your computer and convert it into a custom tune. Then came the dreaded firmware update and a change to iTunes, after which the loophole which the software exploited was closed up.

The iPhone’s ringtone feature has been the center of quite a bit of discussion ever since Apple flipped the switch last month. With each recent iPhone and iTunes software update, Apple stifled user-generated ringtones (kinda) and remains quietly stubborn on its policy of preferring that users get their ringtones from the iTunes Store only.

I’ve been working on a Wired How To Wiki post on iPhone ringtones, since posting about the cat and mouse game between Apple and the free ringtone hackers gets a bit old. But that said, here’s the latest development: Rogue Amoeba has put together a little package that automates the somewhat cumbersome file extension hack that’s been floating around.

The New York Post is reporting that Apple’s September 5th dog and pony show is set to usher in the age of iTunes as ringtone-management software for iPhone. Apparently the rumored service will see iTunes able to convert any song into a ringtone—for a fee, of course—and you’ll even have the ability to dictate which portion of the song becomes the tone.

Don’t let the name of iPhone hacker NateTrue’s latest offering scare you away. Though you might think so from the name of it, “iBrickr” isn’t designed to “brick” your iPhone. Instead, iBrickr is designed to provide easy-to-use, GUI-driven management of ringtones and third party applications for the iPhone.

In addition to that wonderful iFuntastic app that allows you to add ringtones and rearrange your iPhone’s apps (even after this week’s 1.0.1 software update), iPhone Alley has also made available what is sure to become a staple of iPhone culture and parodies the world over: the ‘official’ music from the iPhone TV ads.

Some rather complicated instructions for installing custom ringtones on the iPhone have been floating around the net of late. Unfortunately they required some pretty involved under-the-hood tinkering. The newly released iFuntastic is designed to simply this process immensely.

The iPhone comes with 25 ringtones, with the ability to set a different one to different contacts. But what if default ringtones like Bark, Marimba, Old Car Horn, and Trill just don’t do anything for you? Sadly, with an out-of-the-box iPhone, you’re out of luck—there’s no built-in way to customize your ringtones.
If that sounds like a minor inconvenience, for a lot of power phone users, it’s not. I know—I include myself in that group, and customizing ringtones is usually one of the first things I do when I get a phone.

If you were hoping to add cool ringtones to your new iPhone (like the CTU ringer that the office phones emit on 24) you’ve undoubtedly been disappointed that Apple doesn’t give you the ability to do so. Well no more. Custom iPhone ringtones are here my friend, but they aren’t easy.
