iPhone accessoriesOne thing I can state for certain, voice command of a cell phone is a must have feature in the car.  Sure it comes in handy other places too but since I’ve been carrying an iPhone 3G I sure miss being able to do simple call-related functions by voice.  BlueAnt is stepping up with the first Bluetooth headset that puts voice command on the headset itself for use with phones that don’t have that capability.  Can you say iPhone?  I knew you could.

iPhone US newsIf you’re getting bad reception on your iPhone 3G, blame your carrier, not your iPhone.

That’s the conclusion Wired.com’s Gadget Lab draws from a survey of 4,200 iPhone 3G owners. The results, posted Monday morning, show marked regional differences that Wired.com believes are primarily due to the maturity — or lack thereof — of the local 3G network, and not some underlying problem in Apple’s (AAPL) hardware.

iPhone gamesWhen I was younger, I fancied myself a bit of a gamer. I’m talking about Duke Nukem, Wolfenstein, and a few old DOS games that nobody would remember.

That was until a little game known as Myst came along. Anybody else out there that played this game when they were younger remember how exciting it could be, even without anybody else in the game to keep you entertained.

For Intel, the question of putting an x86 chip inside Apple’s iPhone is less about “if” than “when” – and that “when” could be two years away.

The chipmaking colossus put the subject on the table at the 2007 Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco by showcasing a prototype Mobile internet device looking like a stretch limo version of the iPhone. “I love the iPhone” admitted Anand Chandrasekher, general manager of Intel’s Ultra Mobility Group. “Apple is a bastion of innovation in their own right, and we are an innovator in our own right. Hopefully sometime in the future our paths may meet”.

Among the many differences between the launch of the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G was one unpleasant surprise for those who didn’t live in close proxmity to an Apple or AT&T store: the iPhone 3G would not be sold online. Now it appears AT&T is relaxing that rule for some of its business customers.

NEW YORK—Best Buy Co. will start selling the iPhone on Sept. 7, becoming first U.S. chain to do so outside of Apple Inc.’s and AT&T Inc.’s own stores.

The announcement by Best Buy expands the availability of Apple’s vaunted phone to 970 full-size stores and 16 smaller Best Buy Mobile stores. It’s also a coup for the Minneapolis-based chain, which has been upgrading its cell phone departments.

A new test version of Apple’s next iPhone firmware update has disabled a key service that will allow background data for native apps, with no clear sign of when it will return.

While beta 4 of the iPhone 2.1 update comes with Apple’s typically unspecific references to bug fixes, it explicitly withdraws support for the push notification service that will send Internet data to third-party apps even while they are shut down.

Reception problems with the iPhone 3G are occurring in towns and cities across the U.S., based on readers’ responses this week to CNET News’ request for more information about their balky phones.

More information has trickled out this week about the iPhone 3G’s reception problems, which are now believed to be the result of a problem with the Infineon chipset inside the unit. Business Week reported Thursday that Apple and Infineon are working on a software fix for the problem, which Apple has yet to officially acknowledge.

After a couple of weeks since the iPhone 3G launch, I gave in and picked up a device at the Apple store just over a week ago to personally give it a try. It is a good device, but the only two improvements over my original iPhone are the 3G support and GPS. The 3G has been very spotty, especially compared to the solid reception I am seeing on the Nokia E71-2, N95-3, and HTC Advantage. I saw 3G at work for the first couple of days, but for the last four days all I get is an EDGE connection.

The iPhone and iPhone 3G have been and are offered with storage capacities of 16GB at most. While many will find the 16GB is more than enough to store all their music, pictures, emails, and a good chunk of their video library, there are those out there with media libraries that can easily eclipse the iPhone 3Gs 16GB of flash memory.
